Polyester Girl

Forever drawn to the wild, psychedelic prints and saturated colours of clothes from the late 60s and 70s, it seemed natural to collect the polyester pleasures that made my heart soar.
However it wasn't long before I remembered my mother's words about man-made fabrics; they just don't breathe.
In cooler climates it didn't seem too much of a bother but here in Brisbane, my wardrobe was getting jammed with amazing gear, yet I had nothing to wear.
Nylon, crimplene, nylon-jersey, polyester of every weight and thickness in every colour under the sun greeted me merrily each morning: "pick me, pick me Desiree!"
It finally dawned on me why there was such an abundance of beaut maxis, flares and jackets in the op shops and markets ... they were an instant sauna in a bag and people in our sub-tropical climate simply couldn't abide them.
So I sold off and gave away a large portion of my polyester friends *sniff*.
I'm afraid I cannot bear to have clothes hanging in my wardrobe that I can't wear for comfort reasons, instead adhering to a cotton-only policy for 1970s gear and drawing on my life-long love and adoration of all things 1930s and 40s.
Rayon was an inexpensive, affordable and hard-wearing fabric during that era, and since it's a synthetic manufactured from wood pulp, it seems a more humidity-tolerant fabric.
What a relief!  I love the styles from the 30s and 40s ... the details are beautiful, the fabrics fare incredibly well for their age and I like the tailoring.
But if you've been popping over here for a while, you'll probably know I never, ever wear any era from top-to-toe ... not my scene.
Modern synthetics are still very dodgy in my opinion, but depending on the cut, they can be worn on days like today ... the last day of winter.
So today I chose a few bits and pieces that I can get away with before the sauna cranks up for six months of summer.
An ode to nylon in its many forms.

Modesty is a Virtue

I have no idea why, but I think I cleared the doctor's surgery this morning.
The clinicians should thank me for scoring them an early tea break for today's appearance.

Don't know what all the fuss was about.
After all, I was very demure in my long skirt, socks and lace-ups, headscarf, pretty blue lace thingumy and jacket.

Perhaps it was Clare's Anti-Joyce badge.

Snail bling ring?

Surely not the skull necklace!

The jacket that blinds?
Or maybe it was the delicious 1980s teddy wonderful Clare of Miss Simmonds Says sent me last week.

I raced home to consult my guidebook, circa 1961.

Chapter Four: Beautiful You, cleared everything up for me.
I was wearing not one but THREE foundation garments, gloves and nylons were not required, I had one kind of jewellery on several parts of my body, which I'm sure is what they really meant in point three.
And there it was, right there in black and white.
"Make the most of you."

Clearly that point should be right at the top of the page coz 52 years later, beautiful homemakers everywhere have forgotten "there's only one you in the whole world!"
Oh those ladies auxiliary chicas, they've been keeping that top tip under their skirts.
This one's for you!

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Having a wee gander at the past year's posts, I'm humbled by the warmth, kindness, generosity, support and love from visitors to my blog.
I'm constantly amazed at the encouragement I get and feel so lucky to be part of an open-minded, welcoming community.
On countless occasions I've shed tears at comments and posts by fellow bloggers.
I may also have wee'd myself a little or a lot at the hilarity that often occurs in Blogland.

I rully love all of youse and if you'd like to do an about turn and stand to attention, I'm more than happy to give each of you a jolly good arse-squeeze.

Do take note of the snap fastener at my waist.
It kept popping open today because of course, I ate all the pies!
I decided it wasn't worth bothering about while out and about today because hell, I still felt fabulous.

Pink star necklace - gifted by gorgeous colour-coded slapper, Krista
Scrabble ring - gifted by lovely Nelly
Earrings and 1950s blue granny necklace - Etsy
Hindu goddess bag, cat brooch - craft market
Bangles, green rose brooch, other rings - thrifted
Shoes - eBay

Most of the shops were shut today, but the Salvos were open, where I satiated my need for a bargain splurge.

I found this gorgeous bead bag and immediately thought of Vintage Bird Girl who shares my lust for the colour GREEN!

I also found a cross-stitched linen tray mat and some gorgeous old ceramics.
The lemon vase has lost a petal and it's stem has broken off and been mended in the past, so clearly it was once much-loved; while the wee leaf dish is Carlton Ware (two bucks!)

Random pic of scallywag Lily, in a rare prone pose.

Have you been doing any post-Christmas shopping?
I'm feeling very smug about picking up a few bargains in Nelly's shop, Vintage Wishes.
The Stylist quickly snaffled this beautiful 1960s cotton quilt I bought from Nelly's treasure emporium.

I picked up these gorgeous 1970s kitsch cushion covers for our lounge ...

... and this pair of scrumptious harlequin chicky-babes.

Lily can't be bothered getting out of my bag to wish you well, but I say Happy New Year to you my dears!
Oh and while you're still in holiday-mode, have a peek at the latest Vogoff magazine, the creation of Melanie at Bag and a Beret.
Wowza!

Love Desiree xoxo

"You Don't Buy a Kebab, You Rent It"

Words of wisdom from The Phoenix, my husband of one year.
Actually it's a year and one week since we got hitched.
It was a lovely spring afternoon in Melbourne where we shared our vows with sons number One, Two and Three, The Stylist and Miss Danni-Long-Legs.

Since that day, we have had more health scares and ups and downs than a crack whore on a bender.
But the kids are flourishing, The Phoenix has kicked some seriously screwy pain killers out of his medication regime, he's also lost about 13kg, which means his target joints have less strain on them and we understand each other a whole lot more.
We made plans to celebrate our first anniversary as husband and wife, but these were scuppered by intense fatigue.
Our health and well-being as individuals and a couple is far more important than marking an anniversary that could leave us even more exhausted and in need of precious recovery time.
We spent last weekend reminded of our remarkable ability to simply enjoy each other's company with talking, sleeping, laughing, sleeping, movies, sleeping, snogging, sleeping, tea, sleeping, eating and more sleeping.
It was blissful.
More pics of our big day out and other Melbourne adventures.
I'm linking to the Visible Monday hot wenches, I hope you've had a fabulous weekend:).
Big love,
Desiree xoxoxo
